What Gutenberg is and What You Should Do About It

Briteweb December 5, 2018

WordPress has been developing a new content editing experience for WP called Gutenberg, which has got marketers and developers buzzing, especially since it’s release is tomorrow, December 6th, 2018.

So What’s the Deal?

This new content editor is the most substantial change to the WP codebase and user experience in many years. It’s supposed to make building a website easier through the use of content blocks, similar to the backend experience of Wix or Squarespace. In the WP 5.0 update, Gutenburg will be merged into WordPress as part of WP Core, replacing the ‘classic’ content editor.

The Impact

The Gutenberg team is moving faster than the WP community plugin authors. This means content created using Gutenberg editor modules is not backward-compatible with older themes and plugins. Content may not display properly and that can seriously affect how your website looks and functions. The more plugins you have, the more likely issues will arise.

What to Do About It

If you are concerned about your site’s compatibility with Gutenberg, you can download and activate the “Disable Gutenberg Plugin” now and check with your hosting provider to ensure that your site won’t be automatically updated to WP 5.0.
